This is the place where you can personalize your profile!
But, how?
By moving, adding and personalizing widgets.
You can drag and drop to rearrange.
You can edit widgets to customize them.
The bottom has widgets you can add!
Some widgets you can only access when you get a premium membership.
Some widgets have options that are only available when you get a premium membership.
We've split the page into zones!
Certain widgets can only be added to certain zones.
"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.
Don't forget, restraints can bring out the creativity in you!
Now go forth and astound us all with your devious profiles!
Because I may not be the best person to ask, since I am far from an expert, I won't get into anything specific about your artworks. But you did ask, so....
I suppose that it depends a lot on what kind of style or medium you are going to focus on and accomplish.
For me and my pen and ink kind of style, a light box and a couple of books on inking comics (DC Comics Guide to Inking Comics is really good) and figure drawing(Burne Hogarth books stand out)helped loads. These impart a very basic, very fundamental approaches and information to both the theory and the techniques that you may need.
For digital coloring, there are lots of good video tutorials out there that make the process very clear and easy to see. Youtube is a good start. I for one am usually able to replicate what I see someone else doing just once, so the video tutorials usually give me a good nudge in the right direction.
And of course there's always practice practice practice!

For now I prefer inking by hand and the finished physical product that I am left with!
